Dunhill, George

George Dunhill was a pharmacist who lived in Pontefract, Yorkshire, England, around 1760. His family grew liquorice. Dunhill is credited with inventing liquorice as a sweet. Until then, liquorice was only known as a medicine for humans and horses. By adding cane sugar and flour, he created the first spiced liquorice mixture, which was then processed into ‘Pontefract Cakes’.
