Lay out the cards here and learn more about the ups and downs of kadó's 28-year history. Enjoy, your kadó-letten!

Twenty-eight years ago, we founded a business specialising in liquorice out of passion – something that had never been seen before in Germany. Since then, we have been steering kadó through the challenges of the times. The founders, Ilse Böge and Frank Büttner, here at our liquorice window and always up for a chat. Let's enjoy liquorice together!

Our collaboration with USE in Kreuzberg, formerly BlindenWerkstatt, has resulted in these beautiful, handmade jewelry boxes for our delicious, hand-picked liquorice blends. Chic, delicious and a truly unique gift!

If you would like to take a look behind the scenes at kadó, you can do so during a guided tour of Kreuzberg with Eat the World. We will chat about liquorice while you enjoy the ‘best of’ liquorice selection. Informative, entertaining, delicious, amusing... !

What is so special about kadó? We import traditional varieties from countries where liquorice is popular, from Iceland to Sicily! And yes – the originals all taste different, reflecting the cultural preferences of each region. Salty flavours from the north meet sweet and tart flavours from the south. And the ‘liquorice equator’ runs right through Germany...

kadó is based in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Berlin's only east-west district. This beautiful tin features the interconnecting Oberbaum Bridge. We've filled it with crisp, poppy liquorice dragées – as colourful and diverse as Berlin itself!

Our liquorice subscriptions has been hugely popular for many years. Over 12 months, you can savour our wide range of liquorice products, delivered straight to your door by the postman. Surprise!

Blimey, who turned the clock? Have we really been around for 28 years? In 1997, we opened kadó, Germany's first liquorice shop, with a proper party. The initial range came from Holland, hence the ‘Fräulein Antje’ cap and my expression. Gradually, liquorice from Scandinavia, Italy and France was added, all researched without the internet and found locally. kado.de has been around since 1998! Liquorice and a book about this black passion complement each other wonderfully. What is liquorice, how long has it been around, and where does its black colour come from? Bear droppings, ox blood, salmiak... This double feature provides amusing and interesting facts for all the senses.

For many, many years, we made a name for ourselves at the weekly markets in this city. On Saturdays, we would swarm out as ‘kadó-letten’ and introduce customers to kadó's range of liquorice products at three weekly markets – whatever the weather. It was great fun, but after 20 years it was also exhausting. Fini!

Our little shop on Graefestrasse was popular beyond Berlin, and not just with liquorice enthusiasts. Then the property boom swept through Berlin and caught up with us too. A 100-year-old building, whose rooms we had lovingly renovated, now had to generate a quick return on investment.
So we reinvented kadó, moved a few doors down to Graefestrasse 68 and have been continuing online ever since. Now we welcome our customers at the liquorice window. Welcome to kadó!

Confetti... for the shop's most popular bestseller, the kadó liquorice mix. Here, the diversity of Europe comes together in all its facets, shapes, recipes and flavours in the LAKRITZ segment. You are cordially invited to join us on a culinary journey of discovery from Iceland to Sicily.

Our little liquorice bags from the cinema counter are very popular with film lovers. They accompany the film experience in these arthouse cinemas. Liquorice from kadó in recyclable, plastic-free cellglass bags (no cellophane!).
